Observation details
Foraging at low altitude with some White-throated Swifts and Cliff Swallows. By the naked eye, the bird got my attention as shape & size evoked white-throated swift, but flight style evoked Vaux's Swift. With optics, it was clear that it was a big swift with wide wing bases and a squre tail. It also repeatedly banked against the light, showing that it was all black even when not back-lit. It was only about 50 feet off the ground (below a low cloud layer), and made foraging passes for close to a minute before disappearing. This was only a mile North of the 101 freeway & coast (just South of the first hillside pullout, at about 34.441328, -119.923295).
