Observation details
In flight these birds had a white stripe on top of the wing, with black on the wing's leading and trailing ends (or on either side of the stripe). Roughly duck-sized. Black legs were recorded; the zoomed pic below indicates that they were actually gray, although they look black in the lower quality areas of my photos. Black on wing at first thought to be near alula, which supports Willet's black patch there. Black bill was the same length as the head. They were sticking to shallow water/mudflat, and not foraging very actively. Little speckling on their bodies. Since it's breeding season, other sandpipers that are gray in nonbreeding plumage (like godwits) are ruled out. Fun find, and a lifer for me!!
