Observation details
This swan was apparently found at the platform at Liberty Loop yesterday. It was identified as a Tundra Swan. Matt Zeitler came upon the bird this morning and noticed some inconsistency with the birds field marks. Several of us joined him and were unable to come to a conclusion as to the ID. My description: large white swan with very long neck. Head and neck are dusky gray in color. Large bill is very straight along the upper edge to the crown. There is a distinct "V" on the forehead above the bill. There is a red gape noticeable. We thought that the bird would be completely white at this age if it were a Tundra Swan. The gray head and neck made us lean toward Trumpeter. The bill does not completely encompass the eye at the base, but we noted in our field guides and Crossly Guide at home that immature birds don't always indicate that feature. We are awaiting review of our photos by those with more expertise to determine a definite ID. Kevin McGowan confirmed for us the identification of immature Tundra Swan
