Observation details
Picture of the adult male. 2 SY males and 3 females also seen. Males in sages between Rose Garden and Office, females in Palo Verde in desert section. Females separated from other selasphorus by very short tails that don’t project past wingtips at rest, with only tiny bits of rufous on the edging of tail feathers. Solid green backs, less intense rufous wash to flanks, very fine faint speckling in throat without denser central patch. Beware immature Allen’s, which can look very similar (nearly identical coloring and throat pattern), but note that juvenile Allen’s show slightly longer tail, with more extensive rufous at base of tail feathers, and rufous edging to uppertail coverts.
