Observation details
Initially called these SBDO in the field, but after extensive study of the photographs and comparison with those provided in The Shorebird Guide, and with help from Frank Fogarty who states, "They are extensively red bellow with minimal white and have broad white tongues that don't connect to the pale margins on the scaps and coverts. They also have heavily marked throats and distinct, white-edged bars on the flank plumage, in addition to that classic 'swallowed a grapefruit body shape'", I'm reasonably confident that these are indeed LBDO. Vocalizations were not heard at the time of observations. I'm open to an expert opinion on this one, and I want to ensure the entry is correct for eBird, if that means moving it back to the slash option, please let me know and I'm happy to oblige. My only prior experience with LBDO was a group at Chincoteague NWR in the winter of 2016, which were vocalizing as they fed at Swan Cove (w/JF, MA, TMD), so this is certainly not a species I have much familiarity with.
