Observation details
Conservative count. Saw Mallards on the bank of the stream a few times, something I have noted rarely before. Heard persistent quacking from downstream for a while around 0715. Pairs flushed from the stream along our route on numerous occasions; some but not all of those noted here. A pair flushed from the east part of reach 4 at 0752. At 0900 a (different?) MALL pair flushed from reach 3 and circled before flying off. At 0906 another pair took off from the same general area. At 0935, 2 pairs flushed from the middle of reach 3 after we saw 1 male briefly out of the water on a low bank of the stream. Noted a pair of Mallards on the stream bank at the turnaround. At 1247, I saw 1 female in flight with 4 males, making a large circle over the stream between the rocky draw and the diversion. I heard the female (I think) quack a few times; otherwise they were all nonvocal. Courtship flight?
