Observation details
***Updated 3/26/19 per Rich K from Sherri Williamson: Despite the bird's robust physique, pale eyebrow, heavy gorget pattern, and unnotched tail, her relatively long, round-tipped greater secondary coverts are sufficient in and of themselves to rule out a pure Anna's. The Black-chinned characteristics she shows include: * proportionally long bill, though its straightness suggests Anna's; * P1-6 distinctly narrower than P7 with emarginate inner vanes (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/105455721, https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/105681351); * P8-9 broad and blunt-tipped (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/114915151); * P10 "club-shaped" and distinctly curved, with the outer vane widening slightly toward the tip (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/104981911); * triangular tips on R5 (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/96001381, https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/104981921). Additionally, the absence of any signs of primary molt in any of the photos through the summer and early fall are consistent with Black-chinned and inconsistent with Anna's. Initially ID'd as Anna's Hummingbird. Original notes: First spotted around 10am feeding on Mealy Blue Sage, then made a quick stop at the feeder. I was able to get bins on it briefly and immediately noticed the pale malar stripe and confirm the presence of a gorget but could not determine color, though I thought I made out a hint of red. The bird flew to the pond, then disappeared. I kept an eye for it but didn't see it again until late afternoon, when it briefly returned to the feeder and I was able to get a few pics. The bird appeared short-billed and short-tailed with obvious pale malar separating the gorget, pale eyebrow, and no black behind the eye or on the lores, all features that fit Anna's but not an Archilochus sp. Assuming this is an immature male as the gorget seems too extensive for a female but obviously hasn't molted into full adult plumage. I did not see the bird this morning but will keep an eye for it.
