Shows distinctive silhouette - long tail and long, pointed wings.
Observation details
Large buteo flew over the point at 7:30am being mobbed by crows. Distinctive black flight feathers and pale underwing coverts gave the wings a black and white appearance. Breast was streaked darkish, not fully moulted in yet. Pale belly. Tail lightly barred below with bars close together, very different from strong black and white broad bands of red-shouldered hawk. Wings and tail appeared longer than red-tailed hawk. Extremely poor silhouette photo enclosed, taken when the bird was flying away into bright sunlight.
