Seen here throwing bits of tree away from the hole
Observation details
We observed a pair of Red-Breasted Nuthatches undergoing the process of excavating a hole in the tree, presumably to nest in. At first we only saw one, which would poke it's head into the hole (see image ML95700501), come out with a beak full of dead tree and throw them away (see image ML95715521). At first we though it was only one, but then another Red-Breasted Nuthatch we'd spotted a short distance away flew over and took over while the first departed.
