Observation details
***Mega. Male feeding in an apple tree on the Mass Audubon Nahant Thicket property. Easily viewed from the boardwalk at the south end of the property near Willow Rd, facing toward the houses. The bird did not visit any feeders during our hour of observation. The oriole preened, shook, scratched, and vocalized for us, while perched in the sun. The chatter call in this checklist appears to be the first vocalization recorded for Bullock's Oriole east of Texas, according to eBird and xeno-canto.org. The combination of the bright orange cheek, supercilium extending behind the eye, and the orange flanks rule out Baltimore and Black-backed Orioles, which are monophyletic with Bullock's.
