Observation details
Ah, felt like an Oklahoma moment in cold, snowy Nebraska! Area 2, near ranch house looking thing, in row of evergreens and prairie grasses. First saw the bird and thought we were getting a very early Kingbird, so had the camera out, got it in focus, and was shocked to see this instead! Very large phoebe, dark gray on top, darker gray-black head, head peaked-looking, gray on most of chest, red-brown on belly to under tail. Landing on prairie grasses, shrubs, and often seen in the road. Was still there when we came back. When first found, barely had taken a picture when the Sharp-shinned Hawk came along and the bird flew, slowly (!) right below it. Hawk started to chase, but then thankfully broke off chase. When we left, the bird was still alive and well, though the hawk was also still hanging out. See photos.
