Observation details
You can imagine our surprise to see this large, beautiful black and white shorebird when we stopped along U.S. 31 to check for ducks and geese! Diagnostic marks: black upperparts, bright white underparts, long slender bill, long thin pink legs. Larger than a Yellowlegs but smaller and more delicate than an Avocet. We watched the bird for almost 3 hours actively foraging along the south shore of the pond, picking items from the grassy, flooded pond margins and in the mud along the edges. The distance away did not lend for good photos, but the scope view was awesome. Photos.
