Observation details
Sean Walters and I were walking along dike between pond (marsh-edged) and marshy ditch > 1 hour before sunrise. We had BCNH, multiple VIRAs etc and were playing recordings of rails, AMBI, MAWR, COYE, owls. A high-pitched, thin seet note unfamiliar to me in CO was heard several times (somewhat intermittently). Sean asked me "What is that call" at the same time that I thought "Nelson's or LeConte's" -- this was followed by several things: pishing, recording, listening to bird while listening to calls from Macauley of both species. We heard the bird many times, sometimes rather close, over 10+ minutes. It responded most vigorously to owl tapes and a soft sibilant pishing, Many opportunities were had to compare bird to "known" recordings from Macauley. We returned during day, tried a number of techniques, seemingly failing. But when we turned back towards car, an Ammodramus flew in front of us giving the same calls that we heard at night. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate any sparrow other than Song thereafter. Recordings to be added later.
