Observation details
Red Crossbills have been observed in this location for three weeks now. There were 30 Red Crossbills present this morning. We recorded at least two or more vocalizing birds and sent the recording to Cornell University where the recording was analyzed by Matt Young who identified both Type 2 (Ponderosa Pine) and Type 3 (Western Hemlock) Red Crossbills being present based upon the recording. We do not how many of each type were present, and we also do not know which Type was engaged in "billing" -- a courtship ritual. We are therefore submitting three separate Red Crossbill entries for this date of March 4 -- one for Red Crossbill courtship behavior on the part of a male-female pair of unknown Type and one for each of the two Red Crossbill Types present today.
