Observation details
Bird was observed from a considerable distance, likely >800m, in good light. Bird was significantly large than the RBGU and the various duck spp in its vicinity. Additionally, it showed a very dark mantle, much darker than the RBGUs in the area. The bill appeared large and bright yellow but was difficult to discern well at such a distance. The bird was initially observed and photographed resting on the water until it rose in flight to chase a duck spp. that had come up with food. In flight, the bird showed a very bulky appearance with a barrel chested look. Primary and underwing coloration was not noted. Just before landing, the bird extended its legs forward and they appeared pale pink in color, rather than yellow of a Lesser Black-backed Gull.
