Media notes
The group of birds in this recording was relatively near the nest (about 1000 feet). They are not necessarily the nesting pair as there were other RECR in the area. Possibly type 2? Some calls were made while perched.
Observation details
Below are recordings from Red Crossbills from the area at Montague plains (old Northfield road). As noted in previous posts, there is a confirmed pair of birds building a nest (see 3/15/18 post for photos). For several of the recordings below I can confirm that the birds making the call notes are the nesting pair because I saw them returning to the nest while they were calling. There are also several recordings of birds heard in the general vicinity—for these recordings I indicate that the birds were not at the nesting site and therefore may be the nesting birds or some of the other Red Crossbills that are frequenting the area. There is a small group of crossbills in the general area, and very likely more than one type. It appears that the nesting birds are type 1 and that there are also type 2 birds in the area. The most individuals I saw at any one time was five. Note that there is some clipping in a few recordings due to wind gusts.
