Drumming from the dead-topped Douglas-fir where the NOPO had been perched shortly before.
Observation details
Heard occasional, rapid drumming from an area with many dead Pinus contorta, SW of the dead-topped Doug-fir where the pygmy-owl sang. Pattern and speed of drumming was consistent with HAWO (or NOFL). At 1026 we heard a HAWO "peek" call, confirming the woodpecker's identity, then saw it fly to a small snag near (west of) the dead-topped Doug-fir where 1 NOPO was then perched. At 1027, the HAWO flew to somewhere out of sight, closer to the NOPO, in the same clump of Doug-firs where the owl was. It looked like the NOPO was looking down, likely toward the woodpecker, and ca 10 seconds later the owl flew out of sight that way. A few seconds after that, I saw the HAWO fly back to the previous small snag it had been in, and ca 10 seconds after that the owl flew at the HAWO. The woodpecker seemed to side-step or circle around the snag a bit, away from the owl, which missed and continued on to the west, accompanied by high-pitched MOCH aerial predator alarm calls. The HAWO then flew to the dead top of the snag where the NOPO had been perched and drummed several times, before flying off to the north with more "peek" calls.
