Observation details
All either juveniles molting into 1st basic plumage or adults in basic plumage. In basic plumage this species looks remarkably like Common Tern, especially since most had incompletely grown tails that did not extend beyond folded wing tips. Keys to identification: rapid shallow wingbeats, ¿tureep¿ or ¿kureep¿ call, long, thin all black bill, very pale gray mantle. Most birds had fainter carpal bar than Common, but a few approached Common in boldness of bar; many had scaled or spotted forecrown and area just below/behind eye, but many did not. Black crown extended straight back from eye, did not dip below line of eye.
