Observation details
Observed four Hoary Redpoll feeding on exposed grass. There have been several around the Iqaluit area for a few weeks now. I have been backyard watching since 2011. Every winter, around mid-December, redpolls have appeared on tundra. A flock overwintered during the whole winter of 2015. (They may have relied on several feeders around town) They feed on grass stalks/seeds that are exposed from the snow. In fresh snow, when it gets windy, I have seen the birds burrow into the snow to make their own, personal shelters. I wonder where they have spent the fall and early winter, before arriving here?
