Media notes
Smaller male is being pursued by the larger female in this image.
Observation details
We were able to call this pair over to us for excellent observations which we were unable to get at the Rancho La Belen reservoir. The larger female was aggressively chasing the smaller male. The female very aggressively came towards our position from deep in the wetland, as an equally aggressive male whom she preceded to chase. The male reacted to the call coming from closer to our position. The female began jumping into the air flapping her wings as she began to peck the male on the head and back. In Northern Jacana the female mates with many males, referred to as Polyandry. We observed excellent views of the displayed spurs on the wings and what appeared to be territorial defense by both the male and female. The male was reacting to the the male intruder and the female was probable reacting to both the call and the sight of the male. There is also significant data finding polygamy as well in Northern Jacana, with males mating with multiple females. There are multiple types of polygamy which I will not elaborate on here. In Jeff Sole's and Dan Millers images you can clearly see the female attacking the male... perhaps he likes this? Many thanks to Dan and Jeff.
