Observation details
There were two of these tiny California Gnatcatchers hopping daintily, but rather quickly among the chaparral and in the sand along the trail/road. Whenever they would get too close to each other, they made this funny, repeated, buzzing noise and continued on their way. I'm assuming that meant they were not in fact lovers/friends but, more likely, rivals. They were not in breeding plumage though so I was unable to ascertain gender. One was so friendly and "tame" that he literally almost hopped on my shoes while looking for food. The zoom lens on my camera couldn't focus bc he was so close, but I didn't want to move and scare him away. I think that's the first time I've ever had that particular problem while photographing birds.
