Female Barrow's goldeneye (top of photo) Susquehanna River, Wapwallopen, Luzerne County. Photo by Rick Koval
Observation details
First documented record for Luzerne County. Rick Koval and Wendy Kiska observed a female Barrow's goldeneye within a large flock of common goldeneyes on the Susquehanna River. The bird exhibited a round brown head with a pronounced steep forehead and entirely yellow bill unlike the female common goldeneyes in which three individuals exhibited yellowish bills. Distinct shape of head as well as well pronounced yellow bill separated this bird from female common goldeneyes. Bird was later seen later that afternoon by Stan Galenty and myself, but did not remain afterwards.
