Observation details
Flew over at 1409 in front of us, heading N. In the field, seemed brownish or grayish above and very white underneath. Struck me as a large falcon; seemed larger and wingbeats and proportions seemed different from MERL. Specifically looked for but did not see dark axillaries, as in PRFA - photos confirm that this was lacking. In the field I wondered if it might have been a NOGO given the color pattern, but this seemed a fairly unlikely bird in such open habitat. Dan noted that the wingbeats were short and stiff. Full crop. After significant gyrations, thinking it was a PEFA or a GYRF, and soliciting several addition opinions, I conclude that this bird is indeed an adult NOGO. Salient points include the dark cap on the head; rounded wingtips; bulging secondaries; and long tail. A surprising find in this habitat!
