Observation details
Several hundred Aythya observed at about 300 yards away. Estimates are conservative. Ring-necked Duck not as numerous as Lesser Scaup but the count is still conservative. Males told apart from Lesser Scaup by visible ring on bill (not neck) and dark back. Females have visible eye ring and pale cheeks that contrast with darker crown. Females also have visible ring on bill. The photo below contains about 120-125 waterfowl; mostly diving ducks with some coots. This raft was approximately ten times larger than photo.
