Media notes
Taken with my Sony and cropped. The bird was smaller than the pic seems to show.
Observation details
Small bodied. A little over half the size of the Canada’s. Maybe 65% the size. Paler, short stubby bill. steep forehead, short thick neck were all evident. It was the small size and the overall paler plumage that was easily picked up on. When the bird faced me just right, I could see the neck ring. I don't always see that. The bird is one of the bigger Cackling that I am convinced is Cackling and not a Lesser Canada - with the bill size and structure. I have seen smaller Canadas - but the bill is not right for Cackling. The variation in these geese is amazing and makes for a nice study. I have been reading that the neck ring - or lack of - is variable. Both species can show. Or not.
