Media notes
Two things to note in the close-up of the head: (1) the entire crown is brown/cinnamon, an effect that is perhaps not obvious in ML83131981; (2) the lower edge of the big is not ragged/irregular (as suggested in ML83131981), but, rather, overlain by a white breast feather.
Observation details
The bird exhibits the characters of Gilded Flicker: extensive brown/cinnamon across entire crown; broad black rectrix tips; large black oval on breast; pale/gray back; red malar; bright yellow in wing and tail. The bird gave a light/wimpy "whirrr" call on flushing; I heard this several times. Note: At the time of observation, I assumed I was looking at a Red-shafted/Yellow-shafted intergrade. This is the only photo I have. While observing the bird (off and on for 15 minutes), I was struck by the brightness and pure-yellow of the wing/tail, and by the sweetness of the "whirrr" call.
