Media notes
The photo was in what I would consider low light--in a shrub in the shade. However, it was a sunny afternoon, with snow cover (thus, high albedo) all around.
Observation details
The bird exhibits the characters of Gilded Flicker: extensive brown/cinnamon across entire crown; broad black rectrix tips; large black oval on breast; pale/gray back; red malar; bright yellow in wing and tail. The bird gave a light/wimpy "whirrr" call on flushing; I heard this several times. Note: At the time of observation, I assumed I was looking at a Red-shafted/Yellow-shafted intergrade. This is the only photo I have. While observing the bird (off and on for 15 minutes), I was struck by the brightness and pure-yellow of the wing/tail, and by the sweetness of the "whirrr" call.
