Observation details
Seen at the count beginning, perched in a deciduous tree near Cooke and Highland, mobbed by 4 BBMA, 1 within a few meters of the hawk at times. At 1301, the SSHA flew to the south and I lost sight of it in the vicinity of a dense spruce ca 30 m S of its initial perch. Presumably it and the MERL both went after a HOFI near this dense spruce, as described under MERL. At 1307 the SSHA flew north again, apparently from low within the dense spruce, where I had suspected it might be but had not relocated it. As it flew it carried something in its talons, seemingly smaller than a HOFI (the remains of one)? It disappeared near the base of a spruce ca 20 m N of its original perch and a group of 3-4 BBMA vocalizing frequently while perched in the top of a deciduous tree ca 30 m farther east suggested it might have ended up near there, presumably low because I did not relocate it. Proximity and age suggest that this was likely the same individual I detected earlier in the day near 3rd and Dakota.
