Observation details
Continuing bird that had gone unreported since December 24th (I believe). At 10:30am I noticed a woodpecker moving high in one of the two *very* large (mostly dead) Cottonwoods at the site (where I believe the bird had been originally found). It then flew overhead to a tree on the eastern hillside before finally flying to and hanging out in the large dead looking fruit tree immediately adjacent to the trail. All this time it was giving a loud, thin "Merrrrrrr" call. Approximately the same size as a Red-naped or Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Cherry red head, bib, and breast with blackish (dusky) lores and limited bit in the auriculars. Longish silvery bill. Limited white moustachial mark seems less extensive than might be expected for the "daggetti" subspecies. Lemony-yellow wash to the underparts with dusky streaking down either flank. Upperparts black with two rows of yellowish spotting running down the back. Conspicuous white wing patches visible both in flight and when wings were folded. No clear indicators of any Red-naped Sapsucker ancestry. Seen at the coordinates: 32.837183, -108.604162
