Observation details
Continuing bird, found in Arcata bottoms two days ago by Rob Fowler and refound by him at this location. Larger white-headed gull with pale eyes, streaking on head heaviest around eyes and down back of head to nape. Medium-pink legs, and a mantle color perhaps just a shade paler than nearby WEGU. Long and straight bill. Large white window on P10, smaller window on P9, with small subterminal white “pearls” on P5-7. White trailing edge of wing too thin for SBGU, and mantle color too pale. Distinguished from American Herring Gull by significantly darker mantle color, darker pink legs, and red orbital ring (seen well when bird perched atop lightpost less than 10m away). Really interesting looking gull!
