Observation details
Seen almost immediately and observed well by all present as it moved about the closest trees (tipu, eucalyptus, pine). Slurred, soft "chip" note much like that of Northern Parula, given very rapidly at times. Very distinctive and brightly colored warbler with bright yellow underparts, deepening to orange on the upper breast; white undertail coverts, whitish lowermost belly and vent area. Yellow of the throat extended well up to auricular area; not at all pinched off on the lower throat as in all Northerns. Black loral area, solid blue gray head; blue-gray wings with broad and bold white wingbars; much white in outer rectrices (tail appeared a bit longer proportionately than that of Northern). Visible portions of upperparts were gray. Maxilla dark, but mandible mostly pale pinkish-yellow; legs fairly pale.
