Observation details
Minimum 125 in one roost. Paoli IN. GPS N38D 33’ 27”. W86D 28’. 35”. This is probably an undercount, I tried to count individually but was overwhelmed, then I tried counting by 5’s and 10’s but still had difficulty, I then took a series of photos that might give an estimate but cannot process them for a week or more. The birds were landing in trees on the west side of Paoli for the night but most of them were hidden by other trees after they landed. There was an impressive constant swirl of vultures overhead with many also coming and going gliding along the nearby hillside. Birds ID by short stubby tail, shorter wingspan than TV , and white underside primary feathers when the birds banked just right in sunlight. A nonbirder had already stopped to watch them saying he had hunted and fished locally his entire life but had never seen anything like this. He thought there were 400 or more vultures in the air.
