Observation details
Upon arrival at pond, immediately noted a king bird perched atop leafless tree near the frontage road. The bird was obviously a kingbird based on its upright posture, entirely yellow breast and belly, and grey head. Specially, the bird was a Couch’s Kingbird for the following reasons: yellow on belly was bright lemon in color that extended all the way up breast to the throat, in the upper breast area the yellow became more greenish in color and contrasted with a grayish white throat and grayish head, a few minutes later seen from the backside the plumage color was olive green and I importantly the top size of the tail was the same color Additionally, the tail was clearly notched in the center. Remarkably, as we watched five other individuals all identical in appearance appeared for a total of six individuals. Of the six, four issued loud “kip” calls, distinctive of Couch’s Kingbird. Two of the birds remained silent but were presumed to be Couch’, although Tropical could not be definitively ruled out.
