Observation details
From 'Bull's Birds of New York State' © 1998. Occurrence: The only NY specimens are from the South Shore of LI. At least 15 extant specimens were listed by Dutcher (Auk 8:201, 11:4), including five in the AMNH [American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY], the remainder scattered in other collections, most without detailed data. One male was shot as it landed among decoys in Great South Bay near Quogue, Suffolk Co. in 1858. The last recorded LI specimen was collected in the fall of 1875, USNM [U.S. National Museum, Washington, DC] 77126.
