Observation details
Counted by fives. Heard redpoll "che-che" chatter calls in the vicinity of the eastern boundary of reach 4 early, then it was quiet for a time. At ca 1010, I heard chatter calls again and 15 redpolls flew over from near the residence NE of the eastern edge of reach 4, landed for less than a minute along the stream distant upstream of me, then flew SW, possibly veering ca west to continue upstream. Except for the male CORE noted below, I did not detect any redpolls again during the survey. Apparently solitary, nonvocal male observed for several minutes along the stream in the eastern portion of reach 4, after seeing a flock of about 15 redpolls fly off from the vicinity after briefly perching along the stream. This individual was in a relatively open section with 1 large willow clump and a shrubby, dead tangle of wood covered with Clematis ligusticifolia on one steep streambank. Seen picking with its bill on the ice covering most of the stream, in the snow, on several steeply sloping dirt banks, and within the Clematis tangle. It initially flushed from the Clematis tangle but then came back within a minute or 2, continuing to forage and approaching within 3 m of me. It moved upstream when I shifted position slightly, alternating short flights upstream with more apparent foraging, picking with its bill on steep streambanks. There was a small tongue of open water in the stream in this area, though it was mostly frozen over. After the redpoll disappeared from sight upstream, I heard brief redpoll vocalizations from that area, though I could not be positive that the same bird was responsible. All photos are of this male. Because of the rarity of HORE and the dubiousness of the taxonomic distinction, I am assuming all redpolls detected here are CORE unless there is convincing evidence to the contrary.
