Observation details
Clear sighting on sandy river bed. Flushed to tree, calling, where obtained photos, from which it is, of course, difficult to rule out vaalensis. Our guides, Jonathan Francis and Gary Douglas, who are accomplished and deeply familiar with the area, opine that Buffy Pipit seldom to never occurs in the Zambezi River Valley and that all the birds are Plain-backed. From a habitat perspective this makes sense, so it seems possible that the filters (and the guide books) need adjusting. We saw several more pairs over the next few days and the Faansie Peacock "LBJ" keys (eg depth of tail bob) seemed consistent with leucophrys, except for posture, which seemed a bit vertical.
