Observation details

Evenly blackish overall, excepting neck and head. Body feathers without any internal markings. Tail solidly dark. No curled tail feathers. In flight, underparts dark, excepting underwing, which was largely white on coverts (see photos). Speculum dark purple with narrow pale trailing edge. No pale leading edge. Bill greenish yellow. Head and neck paler than body, but grayish and not as contrasting as in MEDU or MODU. finely streaked throughout. Blackish crown and eyeline, though not as contrasting as in MEDU as base color darker. No dark near gape. A bit larger than most surrounding male Mallards
