Observation details
Second state record. Observed the bird primarily working a spruce windbreak row on the edge of a harvested cornfield, though slowly wandered back to the yard of the homeowner that discovered the bird. Bird vocalized frequently, mostly repeating single "kip" notes. These notes had a tonal quality that sounded like a combination of an agitated Song Sparrow and a typical Downy Woodpecker call. However the bird did on two occasions a series of squeaky notes, ended in the "breer" call/song. Eventually after prolonged observation the resident Northern Shrike engaged the Kingbird in a dynamic aerial chase and the shrike drove the Kingbird off with it disappearing into the woodlot east behind the ponds.
