Observation details
From parking area, walk about 200 meters to small spring that cascades down hillside. The Winter Wren and some Pacific Wrens, were together in this area. The Winter Wren was on the spring side of the path, as well as on the 'Trout' Pond and small concrete pumphouse side of the path. It was first detected by call which was a 'chimp chimp' call, somewhat more nasal than that of the Pacific Wren, which I think of as 'check check'. The bird also burst into song on a couple of occasions, and the song matched Winter Wren. Several times the bird gave a short rattle, unlike the short rattle of the Pacific Wren. I managed to obtain some poor recordings of the 'chimp chimp' calls. Once the bird popped into vision, and remained in vision for 8 minutes or so, we noted the more distinctive white supercilium, as well as the pale throat and upper breast. The black and white barred flanks and undertail were also very noticeable. When the Pacific Wren appeared next to the Winter Wren, the Pacific was much warmer brown all over, with a less distinctive eye line and less distinctive barring on the flanks. The Winter Wren also showed more noticeable white spotting in the wings than the Pacific Wren showed.
