Mallard male feeding on grass and weed seeds in the mud
Observation details
guards on the lake and on the island constantly calling and answering using the kind of quacking that almost sounds like laughing. The ones foraging under the trees were chatter/rattle calling and murmuring. One male chased another several times, grabbing the wing of the one he was chasing and holding when he got close enough. In spite of slipping on the ice, most Mallards still seem to prefer walking across the ice from the open water to the island. They usually only fly off the island if they are flushed by passersby on the paved path.
