Observation details
Sought assistance with this ID as I am not familiar with this group of birds and the species I believe it is is uncommon in this area and/or hasn't been (ebird) recorded nearby in many years. I believe it is a "Common Sandpiper" as per the description in "The Australian Bird Guide", Menkhorst, P., et. al., CSIRO Publishing, Clayton South, Victoria, Australia, 2017, p. 149. While I only observed the bird for a few minutes, while also trying to observe other birds in the immediate area, the white wing bar was clearly visible, distinct and memorable when it flew off (twice), the "white wedge" in front of the wing was visible and the bird was "bobbing" as described. Before I started looking closely at the bird I saw a form of "barring" near the tail but don't recall that part in detail. Also, my photos below are similar to others posted for the species on ebird. The bird described above was seen at the first bridge over the Yeerung River up from the inlet (near the start of the Estuary View Walk). Later on at the Yeerung Inlet (not on the beach side), I turned around and just caught two birds flying off up over the sand bar also with prominent wing bars that seemed similar to that of the bird described above.
