Observation details
Two female/immature type birds. The largest of the Scoters present, with dark bodies and thin white patches visible at times on the folded wings. Quite visible when wings were outstretched. Bills appeared less bulky than those of the Surf Scoters, with a fair bit of feathering on the culmen which was whitish (unlike the dark culmens of the Surf Scoters). The white patch in the lores (and where the bill met the face) and the post-ocular spot were more diffuse and were not as sharply delineated as the patches on the faces of the Surf Scoters present. Large size and white wing patches should be diagnostic. Reported by C Rustay and M Shoop from earlier in the day.
