Observation details
At least eight, may have been nine or ten - incomplete look when the flock first flew in. Large finches, red and red/yellow, distinctive crossed bills, no wing bars. Mostly males of several plumage variations. Only saw one that actually looked like female plumage. Foraged on cones high in several large pine trees. Except for two very brief sets of flight calls and a few very quiet close-contact twitters and calls, mostly silent. Tiny crackling sounds of pine seed extraction heard. Resulting discarded bits of papery tan pine seed husks wafting down on breeze looked like tiny, golden moths fluttering in the sunlight - a good field clue to birds' presence in a tree.
