Media notes
Adult male and female-plumaged Hooded Mergansers photographed here by Curtis A. Marantz on 18 November 2017 were two of seven birds seen today on Lake Tamarisk, Desert Center, Riverside County, California.
Observation details
A flock of seven birds may have been my highest total for this site, where this species uncommon yet of regular occurrence generally in singles or small groups. All seven birds were small ducks with slim bills that were relatively short, and a medium-length that was cocked upward at times. The lone, adult male kept the crest lowered, so the crown was rather flat in appearance and the crest was difficult to see, yet this bird had the bold, black-and-white pattern to the head, rufous flanks, and black and white markings on the upperparts and closed wings. Also apparent was a yellow eye and a dark bill. The female-plumaged birds all had a frizzy crest and dark-brown plumage throughout, though the crest may have been somewhat paler and more warmly colored. These birds had both the bill and eyes dark.
