Field notes on Marbled Godwit.
Observation details
Cameron's field notes; "Very large shorebird, slightly larger than Hudsonian Godwit; long black legs; very long bill, orange at base and black tip; bill slightly up curved; overall body colour rich Buffy cinnamon; in flight shows Buffy underwing, almost orange; tail appeared unmarked and same buff colour as overall body colour; wings held quite stiff and arched in flight; tended to feed on dry ground; long-necked look and chunky body - similar in overall shape to Hudsonian Godwit; upper wing had dark wrist and leading edge of primaries; with Buffy tan inner primaries and secondaries; at a distance the face looked fairly plain." Pam's field notes; "Very rare shorebird, body size larger than Bonaparte's Gull; bird towered above adjacent Pectoral Sandpipers. Legs very long, "knees" prominent; legs longer than bill which was also very long Bill much longer than head, bright orange at base and dark at tip. Slightly upcurved. In flight, no black or white was seen. Striking orange-buff secondaries and inner primaries from above with wrist and leading primaries dark brown. Standing, underparts Buffy and upper parts similar colour but overall darker with some mottling. Now winter in tail in flight looked plain, no black or white. Overall, standing bird looks plain, Buffy brown, fairly smooth. Watched at a distance of 400m for 20 minutes. Also present on 19 May."
