Observation details
Between 1214 and 1216, I saw a large raptor with steady flight (in intense wind) and some dihedral distant over the Scratchgravels. It seemed to be flight S at first, then turned back to the N and I lost sight of it. At 1219, I again saw a raptor distant over the Scratchgravels, folding its wings and diving, then climbing again and repeating. It repeated this maneuver at least 5 times. I got a poor photo during the first period and again of the bird doing the dives. The photos are poor, but both show a large, dark bird with grayish remiges. When I experimentally lighten the first photo the head appears faintly golden. This provides confirmation of my guess based on the size, shape, steady flight, and dihedral. Could this bird be a resident? In any case, it did not seem to be actively migrating. Apparently adult or near-adult.
