Observation details
Minimum exact count of 30, 20 listed under A. f. flammea. Seen several times along the stream in all sections except reach 4. I saw apparently lone individuals in flight a few times, but mostly encountered the redpolls in groups of 10 to 30. I observed a group of 21 feeding in alders in reach 3. I was trying to identify subspecies and most seemed to be A. f. flammea, but I found it hard to be sure in the field as the birds moved frequently. I watched this group until they flew. I noticed that one of the vocalizations, an upslurred "too-ee" call, sounds very similar to PISI to me, but was generally soon accompanied with a "che-che-che" chatter, very different from any PISI vocalizations. I watched a flock of at least 30 (counted by ones) foraging in alders along the stream at the turnaround point. I approached slowly and quietly and watched them from about 10 m away while they seemed unalarmed and continued to forage and squabble. Looked closely for HORE and did not see any. I also looked for A. f. rostrata but did not see any candidates. I got good views of most of these birds, such that I am comfortable listing 2/3 of them under A. f. flammea. I observed that many birds would forage in one alder. Once a few started to move to another alder, more would follow until most of the flock had moved. At one point, I saw at least 10 on the ground in the field relatively nearby, and I suspected they were foraging there as well.
