Observation details
I think this annual population of Purple Finches at this ponderosa pine location in central Arizona is one of the weirdest things in birding in the state. Continuing, seen earlier in the week by Bryan Patrick and he directed me to the spot to look for them - thanks Bryan. Stood out from numerous Cassin's Finches by curved upper culmens, females with more of an olive hue than CAFI, underparts' streaked with much blotchier markings, males with purple heads that lacked the strong contrast between bright crowns and paler faces seen in Cassin's male Purples with brownish olive flank streaks.
