Painting of male bird by Murray
Observation details
We assume this was 2 pairs as 2 adult males were heard. And birds usually only call in breeding season. I finally had incredibly good views of an adult male. I spent nearly 3 hrs at convent corner from 7am with Bob Dunstan. A bittern called a few times from the dense willows but we could not see it. We were about to leavr when i decided to climb in among willows. This time the bird moved out into outer branches and Bob could see it from a dist of 10m. We had a good view of the bird in a hunched position for a couple of mins and then it slowly crept slowly into dense vegetation. At 1045am i climbed in again and the bird came out into full sunlight standing on waterlilies and flattened reeds. It frequently stretched its neck in a cryptic posture.
