Observation details
First I've seen. First seen at the refuge as far as I know; it's not even listed as an accidental species on the official bird list provided by US FWS. Very close clear views using spotting scope. Bird was cooperative and stood still long enough for me to get photos. Plump sandpiper with orange-yellow legs. Bill was medium sized, slightly drooping with an orange base and black tip. Splotchy gray colored bib and white belly. Spots on flanks. White eye-ring. It's probably a first winter bird because it has distinct white-fringed coverts. It was loosely associating with a group of least sandpipers on a mud flat near the lighthouse.
